shipwrecked at Patagonia (Argentina) in 1886, and died in
Santa Cruz, Patagonia, in 1946.In 1914, after marrying Margaret Anne Elliott of Fogo, a widowed mother of three, Bill brought them all to
Patagonia. The book captures the life of Downer, fisherman turned gaucho, land owner, sheep farmer, and horse tamer. It also
documents life in South America at the turn of the twentieth century, and nine decades of letter writing to relatives back home in Newfoundland.
